Credit card processing in North Charleston, SC has to keep up with a city that runs on trade, travel and growth. Restaurants and bars in Park Circle, shops along Rivers Avenue, Dorchester Road and Ashley Phosphate Road, hotels near the airport and the I-26 and I-526 interchanges, contractors, auto shops and the suppliers that serve the port, the airport and Joint Base Charleston all need to take cards without surprises. We work with North Charleston businesses of all kinds, and with their neighbours in Hanahan, Goose Creek, Ladson and Summerville.
QuadraPay is a merchant services partner for businesses, not a bank or lender. We help you get set up with a merchant account by matching you with acquiring partners suited to your business, then we walk you through the full fee breakdown before you sign anything. Our partners offer support in several languages, so owners and staff can ask questions in the language they work in.
Credit Card Processing in North Charleston, SC: What You Get
A working card setup has several parts. Some come from the acquiring partner, some from the gateway or software, and some from the hardware you choose. Here is what we help North Charleston businesses put together.
| Component | What it does for you |
|---|---|
| Merchant account | The account with an acquiring partner that lets you accept card payments and receive the money in your business bank account. See our US merchant account page. |
| In-person payments | Countertop terminals, smart terminals and point-of-sale setups that take chip, swipe and tap payments. |
| Mobile payments | Card readers or phone-based acceptance for food trucks, job sites, events and home services. |
| Online payments | A payment gateway connected to your website or ecommerce platform. |
| Virtual terminal, invoices and ACH | Key in card payments taken by phone, send invoices with a payment link, or take bank transfers from business customers. |
| Recurring billing | Service contracts, memberships and subscriptions charged on a schedule. |
| Reporting and deposits | A dashboard to see sales, refunds and chargebacks by location, and to track when deposits reach your bank. |
| A fee breakdown up front | Every rate, monthly fee and equipment cost written out before you sign. |
Most North Charleston businesses fit a standard, low-risk merchant account. If your industry is classed as higher risk, we can tell you which partners fit.
Merchant Services for North Charleston Shops, Restaurants and Hotels
For shops, restaurants and hotels, the question is what hardware and software fit the way you sell. A store on Rivers Avenue may need one countertop terminal; a busy Park Circle restaurant needs fast tap payments, tips on screen and split checks; a hotel near the airport needs card-on-file, pre-authorisations and clean check-out.
- Countertop terminals take chip, swipe and contactless cards, plus mobile wallets on a phone or watch.
- Smart terminals add apps for tips, receipts by text or email, and simple inventory.
- Full POS systems suit retail stores, boutiques and restaurants that need menus, modifiers, tabs and reporting by location.
- Several locations. If you run more than one store or a franchise group across the Lowcountry, see multi-location payment processing.
Airport, hotel and military customers. Charleston International Airport is inside the city limits and Joint Base Charleston sits next door, so many customers pay with cards issued in other states or countries. Hotels need pre-authorisations, no-show terms and card-on-file (see hotel credit card processing), and landlords serving military and short-term tenants can take rent and deposits online (see property management card processing). Ask the provider how it prices cards issued outside the US.
Make sure the POS is set up with the right tax rates for your location (see the South Carolina rules section below). Restaurants and hotels in North Charleston collect local taxes on top of sales tax, and a wrong setting is easy to miss.
Ask any provider whether the equipment is bought, leased or included, and whether it will work if you change providers later. Leases that run longer than the merchant agreement are a common source of surprise costs.
Online, Invoice and B2B Payments for Port and Industrial Suppliers
North Charleston is home to much of the region’s industry: port terminals, warehouses and distribution centres, manufacturers and the suppliers, machine shops, staffing firms and trucking companies that serve them. These businesses rarely need a countertop terminal. They need a way to get paid on larger invoices without chasing checks.
- Invoices with a payment link. Send an invoice by email and let the customer pay by card. See invoice payments.
- Phone payments. A virtual terminal lets your office key in a card a customer reads out over the phone.
- ACH and bank transfers. For large or regular invoices, ACH usually costs less than card. See ACH payment processing.
- Corporate and purchasing cards. Ask your provider how it prices business cards and whether it supports the extra invoice data some business customers ask for.
- Online store and service plans. A payment gateway connects to your website, and recurring billing charges maintenance or subscription customers on a schedule. See ecommerce merchant accounts, online credit card processing and recurring billing.
Our pages on B2B credit card processing and merchant services for distributors go into more detail. Tell the provider your average and largest invoice size when you apply, so a big payment does not trigger a hold. If you sell online, have clear refund, shipping, privacy and terms pages in place first; see our merchant account website requirements.
Food Truck, Event and Job-Site Payments in North Charleston
North Charleston’s festivals, concerts and games at the city-owned Coliseum and Performing Arts Center, Riverfront Park events and Park Circle gatherings keep vendors busy. Food trucks, market sellers and trades working on job sites usually take payment on a small card reader paired with a phone or tablet, or on a phone that accepts tap payments on its own where your provider supports it.
- Connectivity. Busy events can overload mobile networks. Ask whether the reader can store payments offline and send them later, and what risk that carries for you.
- Tap, chip and swipe. Make sure the reader takes all three, plus mobile wallets.
- Several readers, one account. If you staff more than one truck, booth or crew, check that every device reports into the same account.
- Online pre-orders and deposits. Can the same merchant account cover your website orders, event sales and job deposits?
Food trucks need their South Carolina Department of Agriculture permit in place before a provider will look at a mobile food business (details in the documents section below). More detail is on our mobile credit card processing page. Vendors can also read about food truck card payments, payments at vendor fairs and craft markets, event payments and trade show payments.
Keeping Card Payments Running Through Hurricane Season
Lowcountry businesses plan for storms every summer and autumn. A power cut or a slow reopening after an evacuation can hit card sales as hard as anything else. A few questions to put to your provider before the season starts:
- Backup connection. Can the terminal switch to a cellular connection if your internet goes down?
- Offline payments. Can the terminal or reader store payments while offline, how many, for how long, and who carries the risk if a stored card is declined later?
- Reaching support. How do you reach support if your phones or office are down, and can you change your deposit account quickly if you need to?
- Restoration deposits. Contractors who take large deposits after a storm should tell the provider in advance. A sudden jump in volume is a common reason for a hold.
Card Processing for North Charleston Restaurants, Clinics and Trades
Cards dominate everyday spending in North Charleston as elsewhere in the US. In the Federal Reserve’s 2026 Diary of Consumer Payment Choice (published May 2026), consumers made an average of 16 credit card payments, 15 debit card payments and six cash payments a month, with cards making up about two-thirds of all payments. Here is how that plays out for the businesses we see most in North Charleston.
Restaurants, bars and coffee shops
Restaurants and bars need fast tap payments, tabs, tips on the terminal, split checks and clean end-of-day reports. See our pages on restaurant card processing and coffee shop payments.
Shops and small businesses
Independent shops, convenience stores and service counters usually need one or two terminals, simple pricing and quick deposits. See credit card processing for small business.
Auto dealers, repair shops and parts stores
Dealers and repair shops take larger tickets, deposits and sometimes payments over the phone. See auto repair, automotive merchant services and car dealerships.
Dental, medical and wellness
Clinics and practices need payment plans, card-on-file and careful handling of patient data. See dental practices, doctors’ offices and medical offices.
Salons, barbers, gyms and personal services
Salons, barbers, gyms and studios need booking deposits, tips and memberships. See salons, barber shops and gyms and studios.
Contractors and home services
New neighbourhoods north of the city, older homes in Park Circle and storm repairs keep builders, roofers, HVAC firms and landscapers busy, often with large deposits and progress payments. See contractor card processing, HVAC and landscaping.
Higher-risk businesses
Some industries are classed as higher risk by providers. If that is you, see our high-risk payment gateway page and we can tell you which partners fit.
What a North Charleston Business Should Compare Before Choosing a Provider
If you are looking for a provider near North Charleston, you probably want someone who answers the phone, explains the fees in plain terms and does not lock you into equipment or long terms. Here is what to compare.
| What to compare | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Pricing model | Is it interchange-plus, flat-rate or tiered? Ask for a sample statement at your volume. |
| Monthly and annual fees | Account, gateway, PCI compliance and statement fees. |
| Monthly minimums | Is there a minimum processing fee if a slow month, or a month closed by a storm, falls below a set volume? |
| Reserves and holds | Will the provider hold part of your sales as a reserve, and when is it released? Say up front if you take large invoices or deposits. |
| Contract terms | Length, auto-renewal and early termination fees. |
| Equipment | Bought, leased or included? Does it have a cellular backup? Will it work with another provider? |
| Deposit timing | How many business days until card sales reach your bank? Is faster funding available, and at what cost? |
| Software fit | Does it work with your POS, booking, invoicing or accounting software, and your website? |
| Support | Phone, email or chat, and the hours. Our partners offer support in several languages. |
South Carolina Surcharge, Sales Tax and Other Rules for North Charleston Businesses
Credit card surcharges. We have not found a South Carolina statute that bans credit card surcharges. A 2013 House bill, H.3477, would have banned them, but it was referred to committee in February 2013 and did not pass. Card network rules still apply: they generally require notice to customers before the sale and on the receipt, cap the amount, and do not allow surcharges on debit or prepaid cards. Offering a lower price for cash is a different arrangement from a surcharge. Talk to your provider and an attorney before adding any card fee.
Sales tax, hospitality tax and accommodations tax. The City of North Charleston’s tax page says the retail sales tax rate is 9%. Restaurants also collect a 2% city hospitality tax on prepared meals and beverages, for 11% in total, and hotels and other short-term lodging add 2% state and 2% local accommodations tax, for 13%. The hospitality and local accommodations taxes are paid monthly through Charleston County. North Charleston reaches into Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties, and the South Carolina Department of Revenue’s county rate chart (ST-500), effective 1 May 2026, lists 9% for Charleston and Berkeley counties and 7% for Dorchester County, so check which county your location is in and set your POS to match.
Debit card fees. The interchange fee that large debit card issuers can receive is limited under the Federal Reserve’s Regulation II. Smaller issuers are exempt.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
Documents You Need for a Merchant Account in North Charleston
Providers ask for documents that show your business is registered, licensed and who owns it. For a North Charleston business, have these ready:
- South Carolina entity filing. LLCs and corporations register with the South Carolina Secretary of State. If you trade under a different name, have proof of it, because providers check that the name on your application matches your bank account.
- City of North Charleston business license. The city’s Business Licenses page says a new business must have a license before it starts operating in the city, that businesses in commercial buildings need a fire inspection first, and that the license is not issued until you show compliance with zoning, building and fire codes. New licenses go through the city’s online portal or the One Stop Shop at City Hall; renewals are made through the Charleston County Revenue Collections portal. If your location is outside city limits, check with the county instead.
- South Carolina retail license. If you sell taxable goods, you need a retail license from the South Carolina Department of Revenue, which you apply for on MyDORWAY. SCDOR lists a one-time $50 fee for each retail location.
- Federal EIN from the IRS, or your Social Security number if you are a sole proprietor without one.
- Owner ID for each owner with a significant share, plus a voided check or bank letter for deposits.
- Processing statements from the last three months if you already take cards.
- Retail food permit for restaurants, food trucks and food shops. Since the state’s food safety programme moved from DHEC, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture issues retail food establishment permits, and says you must have one before selling food direct to consumers. Its annual inspection fee schedule (February 2025) runs from $100 for gross food sales up to $250,000 to $450 above $1,750,000.
- Mobile food establishments. A food truck or pushcart in South Carolina operates together with a commissary. The Department of Agriculture’s Mobile Food Establishment Supplemental form (January 2026) documents that relationship, and the department must be told at once if the arrangement changes. Check with the City of North Charleston on zoning and special event rules for where you can set up.
- Website and policies if you sell online: refund, shipping, privacy and terms pages.

Fraud, 3-D Secure and Chargebacks
A chargeback usually costs you the sale and a fee. A few habits keep them down.
- In person, take chip or tap payments instead of keying in card numbers. Keyed payments carry more risk.
- Online, ask your provider about 3-D Secure, which adds a cardholder check at checkout and can shift liability for some fraud chargebacks away from you. Use address and card security code checks too.
- Phone and invoice orders. Be careful with large first-time orders from unknown buyers that ask to ship to a different address or to be refunded to a different card.
- Clear descriptors. Make sure your business name on card statements is one customers recognise, especially visitors who paid you once on a trip.
- Clear policies for deposits and bookings. Hotels, contractors and studios should show refund and cancellation terms before the customer pays.
- Alerts. A chargeback alert service can warn you of a dispute early so you can refund before it becomes a chargeback.
What Credit Card Processing Costs in North Charleston
There is no single rate for North Charleston businesses. Your cost depends on the pricing model, your industry, your average ticket, how cards are taken (tap, chip, keyed or online) and the types of cards your customers use, including business and out-of-state cards. These are the main pricing models:
| Pricing model | How it works |
|---|---|
| Interchange-plus | You pay the card network’s interchange and assessment fees at cost, plus a fixed markup. The most transparent model, and usually the best value as volume grows. |
| Flat-rate | One rate for most cards. Simple to understand and common for mobile vendors and new businesses. See flat-rate card processing. |
| Tiered or blended | Payments are grouped into tiers such as qualified and non-qualified. Hard to compare, because the provider decides which tier each payment lands in. |
Our credit card processing fees page explains each fee line, and our guide to how card processing works shows where each fee comes from. We show you the full fee breakdown before you sign, so you can compare it with your current statement.

North Charleston Credit Card Processing FAQs
Does QuadraPay work with businesses in North Charleston, South Carolina?
Yes. We work with North Charleston businesses of all sizes, including restaurants, shops, hotels, auto dealers, contractors, clinics, food trucks and B2B suppliers. We help you get set up with a merchant account by matching you with acquiring partners suited to your business.
Is this page for North Charleston or for Charleston?
This page is for North Charleston, the separate city north of the Charleston peninsula that includes Park Circle, the airport and much of the region’s port and industrial area. If your business is in the City of Charleston, see our Charleston, SC page. The advice on providers and fees is the same, but city licenses and local taxes differ.
Is QuadraPay a payment service provider?
No. QuadraPay is a merchant services partner. We do not process, acquire, approve or underwrite payments. We match North Charleston businesses with acquiring and processing partners, explain the fees, and help with the application. The provider you choose makes the underwriting decision and handles your payments.
Can North Charleston businesses add a credit card surcharge?
We have not found a South Carolina statute that bans credit card surcharges, and a 2013 bill that would have banned them did not pass. Card network rules still limit surcharges, require notice before the sale and do not allow them on debit cards. Check with an attorney and your provider before adding any fee. This is general information, not legal advice.
What sales tax do I set up in my POS in North Charleston?
The City of North Charleston says the retail sales tax rate is 9%, with a 2% hospitality tax on top for restaurants (11% in total) and 4% of accommodations tax on top for hotels (13%). Part of the city is in Dorchester County, where SCDOR lists a different county rate, so confirm the rate for your address with SCDOR or your accountant. This is general information, not tax advice.
What does a North Charleston food truck need before taking cards?
A retail food establishment permit from the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, a commissary documented on the department’s mobile food form, a city business license and an SCDOR retail license. Providers will usually ask to see these before approving a mobile food business. Check city zoning and event rules for where you can operate.
Can I keep taking cards if a hurricane knocks out power or internet?
Many terminals can switch to a cellular connection, and some can store payments offline and send them later, but that depends on the device and the provider, and stored payments carry a risk of being declined. Ask your provider before the season starts. We can tell you which partners fit.
How long does it take to start taking cards?
We usually reply to new enquiries within one business day. Provider underwriting typically takes a few days and varies by provider and industry. Having your registration documents, business license, EIN, ID, bank details, permits and any past statements ready helps.
I’ve been declined before. Can you still help?
Declined elsewhere? We may be able to help. Providers have different appetites for industries, credit history and business age. We look at why you were declined and which partners may be a better fit.
How much does credit card processing cost in North Charleston?
There is no single rate. Cost depends on the pricing model (interchange-plus, flat-rate or tiered), your industry, average sale size, how cards are taken and your monthly volume. We show you the full fee breakdown before you sign so you can compare it with your current statement.
